DISMAL SWAMP CANAL TRAIL
The Dismal Swamp Canal Trail opened to the public in June 2005. This 10 foot wide, hard-surfaced trail winds its way through the woods between US Highway 17 and the historic Dismal Swamp Canal for approximately 3 miles. It then
becomes a highway extension of NC 343 and Mullen Road to the Village of South Mills, an additional 1 1/2 miles.
Benches and picnic tables offer places for refreshment and mile markers line the path. As part
of the NC Birding Trail, bird feeders and birdhouses can be found along the trail.
During summer months, the leafy foliage overhead provides relief from the sun's heat. The trail was added to the East Coast Greenway on November 6, 2006.
Trail bikes are available at the Welcome Center for visitors to explore the trail.
