The northeastern mainland surrounding the great Albemarle Sound and its estuaries.  Colonial era river towns include Elizabeth City, Hertford, Edenton, Windsor, Columbia, Murfreesboro, and more. Plantations dot this region, and The Great Dismal Swamp is here, too.
Pamlico-Neuse Region
The Pamlico - Neuse Region
The central coastal mainland with the Pamlico Sound and its estuaries -the Pamlico and the Neuse rivers.  This region, though largely rural, includes the oldest town in North Carolina, as well as the historic Colonial capital of New Bern with its grand Tryon Palace.  Nature lovers and outdoorsmen are drawn to Lake Mattamuskeet.

The Outer Banks
The northeastern barrier island resort vaction beaches of Currituck, Dare, & Hyde Counties.  Local community names such as Corolla, Duck, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Roanoke Island, Hatteras Island, & Ocracoke Island are at once reminders of remote fishing settlements, the home of the Lost Colony, the First Flight of the Wright Brothers, and the modern-day family vacation beaches.
Crystal Coast
The Crystal Coast - Carteret and Onslow Counties
The Crystal Coast, on the central Atlantic NC shore, has a great mix of vacation resorts and quaint historic towns.  Atlantic Beach, Salter Path, and Emerald Isle are well-known beach destinations, while Beaufort and Morehead City are thriving waterfront towns.
Cape Fear Region
The Azalea Coast - Cape Fear Region
This southeastern coastal plain region is best known by the name given to it by sea captains in days of sail --Cape Fear.  Historic Southport and the incredible port city of Wilmington grace the Cape Fear River banks.  Wilmington is the region's centerpiece and home of the annual NC Azalea Festival, hence the landlubber name Azalea Coast.  This area has many, many resort beaches; Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Long Beach, Holden Beach, and Ocean Isle Beach --to name a few.  And don't forget Calabash, a fishing village that made an art-form of seafood cooking that still bears its name --Calabash Style!
